Help Using the Library

Do I need a library Card?
Your Sun City West Recreation Card is your library card. You must have your card with you to check out items.
How do I access my library account?

To access your library catalog account, click “Sign In”. Enter your Rec Card Number as the username and the password is the last 4 digits of the phone number that the Rec Center has on file for you. Click “Sign In.”

How do I sign into Libby? What is my PIN?

To sign into Libby or the Overdrive website, the Card Number is your Rec Card number, and the Pin is the last four digits of the phone number the Rec Center has on file for you. If you still have trouble signing in, call the library’s main number for help, 623-544-6130.

How many items can I check out and for how long?

Check Out Limits

  • Books: 20
  • New Books: 4
  • Magazines: 10
  • Magazines of the same title: 5
  • Puzzles: 5
  • Games: 5
  • Books on CD: 6
  • New Books on CD: 4
  • DVD & Blu-Rays: 7

Loan Periods

  • Older books, puzzles and games – three weeks
  • New books – two weeks
  • Older books on CD – four weeks
  • New books on CD – two weeks
  • DVDs and Blu-Rays – one week
How do I renew my library items?

Item(s) will be automatically renewed two times, three days before the due date unless there is a hold on it. You will receive an email with the new due dates. You must have an email on your account with the SCW Rec Center to receive emails. You can also log into your library account to see if they will be renewed and what the new due date is. How do I put a hold on an item and where do I pick it up?

To put an item on hold, log into your library catalog account and then search for the item in the catalog. Now click the “Place Hold” button to the right of the item you want, then “Submit Hold Request.” If you cannot place a hold through your account, you can call the library’s main line at 623-544-6130 or come into the library and talk to staff in the Information Center. When the hold is ready to be picked up it will be at the checkout desk in the library.

How can I pay my library fines?
You can pay library fines at the library’s check out desk. Only cash or checks are accepted. 
What is a Culture Pass and how do I get one?
A Culture Pass is a pass you can check out at the library and get two free admissions to participating locations.
Choose the Culture Pass you want from the Culture Pass Display in the library and take it to the Check Out Desk. The Pass will be checked out to you, and you will be given a receipt. The receipt is your two free admissions to the location. Only one Culture Pass can be checked out per Rec Card every seven days. 
Does the library do interlibrary loans with Maricopa County Library or Surprise Library?
No, the R.H. Johnson Library is a private library and does not do interlibrary loans with any public libraries.
How do I suggest an item for the library to purchase?

You can suggest an item for the library to purchase in person at the library, or digitally through the catalog.

To suggest an item in person, go to the checkout desk and ask for a Purchase Suggestion form. Fill out the form and give it back to a volunteer at the checkout desk.

To suggest an item digitally, sign into your library catalog account and click on the “Services” link on the menu bar. Under "More Services" click "Purchase Suggestions." Fill out the purchase suggestion and click “Submit your suggestion”.

Due to a large number of recommendations, however, it is not possible to purchase every item. Recommendations are not needed for best sellers or box office hits.

Does the library have free Wi-Fi?
Yes, the library has free Wi-Fi available.
What computers and printing are available in the library?
The library has 12 computers in the Data Resource Center with the ability to print in black & white and color. The Information Center has 3 computers with the ability to print black & white.
Black & white prints cost $0.15 per page.
Color prints cost $0.25 per page.
Can I have library items delivered to my home?
Yes, the library has a Homebound Program, which offers free library items by mail service for Sun City West Recreation Members who are restricted to their homes by medical conditions, physical disabilities, extended illnesses, or excessive transportation problems.

Does the library have a fax machine?
No, the library does not have a fax machine.
Does the library have study rooms I can use?
The library has four study rooms that can be reserved through the Data Resource Center. Come into the library to reserve one or call the Data Resource Center at 623-544-6644.
How do I donate to the library?
The Friends of the R.H. Johnson Library accepts donations of new or gently used Books, CDs, DVDs, Blu-Rays, Books on CD, Puzzles, or Board Games. You can use the Book Drop drive-through on the southwest side of the building, Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.mPlease knock or use the doorbell and someone will be out to help you unload your items and give you a tax donation form.
